Senior placement in Glendale

Glendale has some of the Valley’s biggest hospitals and almost none of its big retirement communities. That combination shapes what a good placement here actually looks like.

Glendale is a large city — an estimated 260,572 residents — and, of the seven communities we cover, it has the lowest share of residents 65 or older, at 13.2%. That number can be misleading, though. It doesn’t mean fewer seniors need help here; it means Glendale isn’t built around retirement the way its northwestern neighbours are, and placement here tends to look different as a result.

Serious hospital care, right in the city

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center

5555 W. Thunderbird Rd. A Level I Adult Trauma Center with a recently added 200-bed patient tower. Heart and vascular care, gynecologic cancer surgery, kidney failure care, orthopedics including knee replacement, and pulmonary/COPD care.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus

18701 N. 67th Ave. Stroke and neurosurgery, orthopedic and spine surgery, interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, robotic surgery, and wound care.

Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center (7300 N. 99th Ave) adds oncology, bariatric surgery, 24/7 emergency care, heart and vascular services, orthopedics, and urology. For inpatient rehab after any of the above, Encompass Health Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital on N. 67th Ave treats stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, cardiac, and orthopedic recovery with three hours of therapy a day, five days a week, and accepts VA Community Care Network and TRICARE. Skilled nursing options in the city include Advanced Health Care of Glendale and Life Care Center of North Glendale.

The honest picture on senior housing in Glendale

Here’s the part that surprises a lot of families: within Glendale city limits, there are no large and no medium-sized 55-and-over communities — only two small ones, each under 500 homes. The larger retirement communities that come up in a Glendale search are actually in Sun City, Sun City West, Peoria, Surprise, or Phoenix, just near Glendale’s borders.

In practice, that means Glendale families typically place a parent one of two ways: into a licensed adult care home sitting quietly in an ordinary Glendale neighbourhood — often the best-value, most attentive option anywhere — or into a larger community just outside city lines. Neither is a compromise. It just means the search has to be done with real knowledge of both markets, not a single zip code.

Is there assisted living inside Glendale itself?

Yes — primarily through licensed adult care homes in residential neighbourhoods, rather than large retirement campuses. We know which ones have room and which accept ALTCS.

Why do most “Glendale” retirement communities show up in other cities?

Because that’s where they’re actually located — Sun City, Sun City West, Peoria, Surprise, and Phoenix all border Glendale, and searches often blur the line. We’ll be straight with you about exactly where a place sits.

Does ALTCS/Medicaid placement work in Glendale?

Yes. See our ALTCS guide for how the programme works, then call us for which Glendale-area homes currently have an ALTCS-accepting bed open.
